New 3D tiki animation short

8 January 2010 by Brian

The new year is always a good time to start something new, tackle a project, or do something fun. In our case we did all three. We took the Honu Studios tiki mascot, Kaimana, and gave him some life in this short featurette complete with an active volcano.

Being fans of the show LOST, we also decided to pay homage to the secrets of the island and the shows title sequence. We’d like to think that if Jacob was going to build a stone tiki statue rather than a large statue of the Egyptian goddess Taweret then this is what that statue would look like.

Modeling and 3d animation done with 3DMax Studio and Adobe After Effects.

Space Chair Project – Toshiba

24 November 2009 by Brian

Toshiba UK recently launched an impressive and creative new campaign spot. We say launched quite literally. Titled the “Space Chair Project”, a simple chair is lifted via balloons from the Nevada desert to the edge of space proclaiming “Arm chair viewing, redefined.” A simple marketing message can easily be lost, but seeing the journey of the chair in HD is inspiring and memorable to say the least.

Now the whole video could have been done in CG, but the message would not have been as impacting. Watching the making of video, we see how 8 HD Toshiba cameras recorded the entire event in extreme conditions. To us, this makes the extra cost well worth the efforts.

The commercial ends with the balloon popping then the chair and equipment begin the free fall back to earth.

“It actually shatters like glass. You’re in vacuum so you’re actually falling a little over mach one on the way down.” – John Powell (JP Aerospace)

Sending a camera up like this isn’t new, but kudos to the creative people who put this together. The production value is top notch. Take a peek at the making of video.

ActiveWrap Knee Wrap Product Video

19 November 2009 by Bret

Here at Honu Studios we do a lot of different things. Things that we don’t necessarily advertise, we probably should though.

One project we recently finished was a short animated video for ActiveWrap, a long time client that specializes in hot cold therapy wraps. The video showcases the ActiveWrap knee wrap, its uses and how it works to treat injuries or soreness.

The process began with a client discussion about the message the video was going to convey. We dialed that in with storyboards and pre-visualization images. Using actual products for reference, 3d models and textures we’re created.  Animating the 3d model of the knee wrap proved to be a challenge. The wrap is a soft material that conforms, bulges, deforms, and fits around ones knee. It has plush straps that stretch as they wrap around the product and secure it with the gel packs inside. Moving the wrap and configuring how it bends and reacts to a human knee showed us really how dynamic the product truly is.

Once the animations were completed it was all brought together in post-production where special effects were added to call out features. Here’s the final video.
